A Colorado family is trying to make sense of the tragic loss of a young husband and father who was murdered in cold blood in Miami Beach.
Dustin Wakefield, 21, was vacationing with his wife and one-year-old son when the family stopped to eat a local café on Ocean Drive, News 7 Miami reported. Tamarius Blair Davis, Jr., 22, approached the family and pointed a gun at Wakefield’s son. The brave dad told Davis, “Don’t shoot my son, he’s just a baby.”
The gunman, then, turned the weapon on Wakefield shooting him at point-blank range, killing him. Video footage of the scene captured patrons screaming in horror as the shooter seemingly danced around his body.
Blair was arrested shortly after in an alley near the restaurant. He reportedly confessed to killing Wakefield. Blair also disclosed that he had taken mushrooms and was emboldened.
News 7 reported that the suspect had shot at another man in the street right before going to the café. That person was not injured.
Wakefield’s family described the young man as a “kind, wonderful person.”
Vicky Furr, a family friend, said, “He was very dedicated to his family. He just adored his wife and really adored his son.”
Another friend William Furr told News 7, “Dustin would frequently hang out in youth group with us and interact with all the kids.”
“His dad was a hero and saved him,” said cousin Sabrina Berlin. “It’s really hard to know that the best of us is gone, and he did do it trying to protect his son.”
Davis, now, faces a second-degree murder charge.
In light of the young father’s death, his uncle, Michael Wakefield, launched a GoFundMe to help his now widow and baby boy. The fundraiser has raised almost $245,000 of its $275,000 goal.
