Kansas City Pastor Carlton Funderburke has apologized to his congregation after calling them âbrokeâ and âcheapâ during a recent sermon.
Pastor Funderburke of Church At The Well Kansas City apologized
to his congregation for calling them âpoor, broke, busted, and disgusted.â He had reportedly done so while complaining that they didnât pool their money together to buy him a luxury watch.âI offer this sincere apology to you today,â he said in an apology video. âNo context could erase the words I used. I apologize to all the people that have been hurt or angered or anyway damaged by my words. For those who know and love me, thank you for your support. For those who now know me because of this video clip, I regret that your first impression of me is one of anger, hate, and resentment.â
He also claimed his behavior âdoes not reflect my heart or my sentiment toward Godâs people, yet, thatâs not discernible in the clip.â
Pastor Funderburkeâs Aug. 7 sermon went viral on social media after it was uploaded to the Kansas City Defenderâs TikTok page. In it, he reminded church members that he still didnât get the Movado watch he allegedly asked for in 2021.
âOoh, you can buy a Movado at Samâs [Club], and you know I asked for one last year,â he was seen preaching in the clip. âAnd here it is all the way in August, and I still ainât got it. Let me kick down the door and talk to my cheap sons and daughters.â
Before his expensive watch rant, the Kansas City pastor belittled his congregation by mocking their perceived finances.
âIâm not worth your McDonaldâs money? Iâm not worth your Red Lobster money? I ainât worth your St. John Knits? Yâall canât afford it no how,â he said. âI ainât worth your Louis Vuitton? I ainât worth your Prada? Iâm not worth your Gucci?â
Despite his disrespectful comments, he said he âsolicitsâ everyoneâs âprayers and forgiveness.â
