Another victim of the 9/11 attack has been identified as Dorothy Morgan. The 47-year-old Morgan worked on the 94th floor of the World Trade Center’s North Tower, WABC-TV reports.
Morgan was a mother of two from Hempstead, New York who worked at an insurance company in the North Tower. She is the 1,646th person identified through DNA, which was collected in 2001. Another victim’s DNA was also identified, but his name is not being made public per his family’s request.
The Chief Medical Examiner’s office said that 40 percent of 9/11 victims still need to be identified. Dr. Barbara A. Sampson is the Chief Medical Examiner of the City of New York and released a statement on Sept. 7 addressing the identifications.
“Twenty years ago, we made a promise to the families of World Trade Center victims to do whatever it takes for as long as it takes to identify their loved ones, and with these two new identifications, we continue to fulfill that sacred obligation,” she said. “No matter how much time passes since September 11, 2001, we will never forget, and we pledge to use all the tools at our disposal to make sure all those who were lost can be reunited with their families.”
Her daughter, Nykiah Morgan, described Dorothy Morgan as an “amazing, giving, caring and loving woman.” She was notified just days before the 20th anniversary of 9/11.
Nykiah recalled that she had talked to her mom just 10 minutes before the attack, and that when she tried calling her mother back, she always got a busy signal. She said that she was shocked to finally have her mother’s remains identified after 20 years.
“Shocking, I didn’t expect it after all this time,” she said.
A new process called next-generation sequencing technology by the OCME Department of Forensic Biology DNA laboratory will help more of the victims to be identified. The technology was also used by the U.S. military to identify remains.
NyKiah posted a beautiful tribute to her mother on the 9/11 anniversary last year on Instagram.
