Democrat turned Trump-supporting Republican Vernon Jones has stirred up controversy yet again. On the first anniversary of George Floyd’s death, he sent out a tweet claiming Jesus deserves the spotlight given to Floyd since Minneapolis police killed him.
The March 2020 incident sparked global outrage and protests calling for police reform.
“I wish people recognized the death of Jesus Christ as much as they do George Floyd,” he tweeted Tuesday, adding, “That’s all I have to say.”
Confused and wondering why Jones decided to compare Jesus to a victim of police brutality, especially a year after his killing, social media users instantly began dragging the former Georgia State Representative over his distasteful and offensive comment.
Rev. Chuck Currie, a member of the United Church clergy, replied to Jones, “Christian minister here. What is wrong with you?”
Another user wrote to Jones, “There are almost 2.4 billion Christians in the world. We can mourn one brother who was murdered on camera. Please and thank you.”
Actress and former The Talk host Holly Robinson Peete also tweeted back at the politician, reminding him that Floyd was a real person who needlessly lost his life and didn’t ask to be martyred.
“I really had to come over here to see if you actually said this. So extremely sad. Not unexpected,” the Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper star said. “It was never about GF being a martyr or a saint. It was only about him being a human being who didn’t deserve his life snuffed out. How tragic you are. But it’s owning libs so….”
No stranger to causing controversy, Jones wrote an op-ed for CNN last year titled “Why I walked away from Democrats to support President Trump,” where he discussed his endorsement of Donald Trump in the 2020 election.

“My fellow Black Americans are expected to fit a certain mold and think a certain way,” he said in the opinion piece,
adding, “We’ve been socially conditioned to blindly support the Democratic Party, never straying from the mental plantation they’ve had us on for more than a half-century.”Jones has also been known for his National Rifle Association (NRA) support, for which he received a campaign donation in 2016.
