As previously reported by News Onyx, Edward C. Matthews was arrested from his living community in New Jersey after being caught on camera using racist slurs and harassing his neighbors. Now, he is returning to the Essex Place community, and security is taking extra caution as he comes back and is facing new charges of drugs and weapons.
After the video leaked where Matthews revealed his address, hundreds of protesters showed up outside of his home, and he was then arrested on assault and bias intimidation charges.
TMZ reports that, due to the upheaval that occurred when Matthews was seen in his community, it is expected for police monitoring to be amped-up in the neighborhood, and more so outside Mathews’ place, which will be monitored 24/7.
Essex Place Community HOA said that there are working closely with prosecutors and police to ensure the community’s safety before Mathews comes home, which could be as soon as Tuesday, where his bail will be decided.
According to the Atlanta Black Star, Mathews was slammed with additional charges following his initial arrest, including weapons, stalking, and drug charges.
Investigators were able to uncover a slingshot and ball bearings that matched those used to damage two vehicles belonging to a neighbor, as well as psilocybin mushrooms, according to the prosecutor.
“These new charges underscore the importance of our community members coming forward with any information they have about criminal activity, whether about this case or any other incident,” said Chief Stephen Riedener. “Because someone recorded Mathews’ conduct on Friday night, we had the evidence to bring the previous charges and the opportunity to gather the evidence that led to these additional charges, including for damage we allege he recently caused to his neighbors’ vehicles.

Prosecutors are reportedly looking into similar allegations of incidents in the past and what involvement Matthews could have in them. Since the living community does not have the legal right to evict him, they’re preparing for the worst.
