New Horizons Baking Company, a Black family-owned business, supplies hamburger buns to thousands of McDonald’s restaurants across the United States.
Trina Bediako, the CEO of New Horizons, is a trailblazing woman in the baking industry and has worked hard to make the company successful.
Trina’s father, Kwame Bediako is the founder of New Horizons Baking Company. Kwame started the business in 1991 with a small bakery in Chicago, and it has since grown into a major supplier for McDonald’s.
Trina began her career working in the telecommunications industry before getting into the family business. She joined as HR director in 2003 and quickly worked her way up the ranks and eventually became the CEO of New Horizons Baking Company in 2017.
Trina says her father “made her work 16 years before giving her the top job.”
“I was happy with what I was doing, but I also knew it was important to work with my father,” Trina says. “I packed up my family and moved my three children to rural Ohio — and I’m not sure they were ready for me.”
Trina currently oversees four facilities with more than 500 employees. Since Trina has taken on the CEO role, she has been leading the company to even greater success. Under her leadership, New Horizons has expanded its product line and increased its distribution to more McDonald’s locations.

“I believe to be a strong leader you’ve got to listen first,” Trina says. “You need to care enough about what your employees’ needs are and be willing to make the change. We want to be the choice employer and the choice manufacturer.”
