Over three months ago, Uber Eats driver Mohammad Anwar was involved in a tragic carjacking incident involving two Washington D.C. teen girls who reportedly tried to steal the car while armed with a stun gun. Unfortunately, after struggling for control of the car, the 66-year-old man, along with the vehicle, struck a tree and a few other cars before flipping over, according to NBC Washington.

He later died at a local hospital from his injuries.

Now, the teen girls involved in the attempted carjacking incident, aged 14 and 15, have received maximum sentences after they respectively pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and felony murder, NBC Washington reported. Both minors were ordered to serve time in a juvenile detention facility until their 21st birthday.

News Onyx previously reported that a video taken of the incident shows one of the young teens in the driver’s seat with the other in the passenger seat, placing Anwar’s car into gear. In the video, he can be

seen after the crash lying on a sidewalk, clearly heavily injured. Anwar was reportedly working as an Uber Eats food delivery driver at the time of the attempted carjacking.

According to NBC Washington, prosecutors said that the teen girls were detained and arrested near Washington D.C.’s Nationals Park after claiming to bystanders that the car was theirs. 

Still mourning the loss of Anwar, an immigrant from Pakistan, father and grandfather, his family said

in a statement to NBC Washington that the crime was “senseless,” adding, “He was a hardworking immigrant who came to the U.S. in 2014 to build a better life for himself and his family. The loss for his family is immeasurable,”

In an outpour of online support, the family has received over one million dollars in fundraised donations.
