Tariq, also known as the “Corn Kid,” has been trending all over social media to the point where celebrities, sports teams, politicians, and companies are using his obsession with corn for advertisement, according to the Washington Post.
On Sept. 3, South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (R) tweeted about Tariq visiting the state’s tourist spot, Corn Palace, and announced that Sept. 3 was designated “Official Corn-bassador Tariq Day.”
“The Corn Kid came to South Dakota’s very own [Corn Palace]!!!” Gov. Noem tweeted. “Welcome to South Dakota, Tariq, our official Corn-bassador! Eat lots of corn.”
The entire “Corn Kid” trend started from a Youtube channel called “Recess Therapy.” Tariq was interviewed by the channel’s owner, comedian Julian Shapiro-Barnum, who is known to interview children for the channel.
When Tariq was interviewed, he educated viewers on the beauty of corn, from the taste to the appearance.
“I really like corn,” he told Shapiro-Barnum. “Ever since I was told that corn was real, it tasted good.”
Shapiro-Barnum asked if he thought corn wasn’t real.
“But when I tried it with butter, everything changed!”
He added, “Look at this thing! I can’t imagine a more beautiful thing. IT’S CORN!”
When asked to describe corn to someone who has never tried it, Tariq didn’t hesitate.
“A big lum with knob. It has the juice!” He exclaimed.
The video ended with Tariq wishing everyone a “corntastic day.”
Influencers, The Gregory Brothers, known for making songs out of viral moments, remixed Tariq’s video, gaining 71.5 million streams on TikTok on the remix and many people requesting a full version. They released the completed song on Spotify, crediting “Recess Therapy,” Tariq, and themselves.
