Ta’Neasha Chappell, a 23-year-old Black woman from Louisville, was arrested on May 26 after allegedly stealing from an outlet mall in Indiana. According to WAVE 3, she was transported to a local hospital from the Jackson County Jail she was being held at on Friday and was later reportedly confirmed dead by Indiana State Police, who will also be investigating the incident.
A GoFundMe has been set up in order to assist Chappell’s loved ones with burial costs, detailing that the former inmate is survived by a young daughter.
“She was a loving mother, sister, daughter, and friend who touched the lives of many around her. She leaves behind her 10-year-old daughter Nevaeh who will miss her terribly,” the online fundraiser stated. “We are all devastated by her loss but are working tirelessly to figure out the events that transpired moments before her passing. In the meantime, we need any help possible to give her the proper burial she deserves,”
Her family has since spoken out, with many still searching for reasons behind Chappell’s seemingly sudden death. According to WAVE 3, Chappell’s mother, Lavita Mcclain, said about a conversation with her late daughter, “She called every day telling us to get her out of there,” adding that Chappell expressed fear about staying in the Indiana jail.
