According to CNN, on July 16, a six-year-old girl was shot and killed in what is believed to be a Southeast Washington D.C. drive-by shooting. Five others were reportedly wounded following the incident.
After being transported to a nearby hospital, Nyiah Courtney was pronounced dead.
Police released a video allegedly showing a gray or silver car passing through an intersection in Southeast Washington D.C. and gunshots coming from the vehicle, CNN reported. According to NBC Washington, the shooting occurred near a liquor and convenience store. It is unknown whether there were multiple shooters or one gunman.

According to CNN, Metropolitan Police Department Chief Robert Contee stated about the tragic loss of life due to gun violence, “The cowards who committed this crime came into this community without any regard for human life, without regard for Nyiah’s life, and opened fire, and that cannot and will not be tolerated,”
Police stated that five adults were wounded in the shooting, including three men and two women, NBC Washington reported. They were also taken to a hospital and reportedly treated for their injuries.

A $60,000 reward was recently announced in hopes that anyone with information related to the shooting will come forward. The D. C. Police Department released a tweet over the weekend showing the alleged suspect vehicle. Also detailing the reward, the tweet stated, “Last night, 6-year-old Nyiah Courtney tragically lost her life to senseless gun violence. We seek our community’s help to bring justice and closure to Nyiah’s family,”
