Rapper Shyne, a former Bad Boy Records artist, is climbing the political ladder in his home country, Belize. He was appointed the Opposition Leader in Belize less than a year after scoring another major career success.
Back in November, Shyne, whose name is now Moses Michael Levi Barrow, was elected to the Belizean House of Representatives. The former rapper won the Mesopotamia seat in the capital.
He announced the new honor on his Instagram page.
“I thank Hon. Hugo Patt(DPL) and Hon. Denise Barrow for the confidence they have expressed in me to serve as Leader of the Opposition,” he wrote.
Denise Barrow is Shyne’s sister who won the Queen’s Square constituency during the November election cycle.
Shyne took over the position as Opposition Leader after a video emerged of former Opposition Leader Patrick Faber running toward the mother of his 2-year-old daughter, threatening to attack her.
Barrow is somewhat of a Bad Boy anomaly due to his success after leaving the label. In 2001, he was
convicted after a club shooting where label boss Sean Combs was in attendance. Although Combs was arrested as well, he avoided conviction.Once he was released from prison, he was deported to Belize and later converted to Judaism. He was eventually nominated as a House of Representatives candidate by the United Democratic Party.
Shyne, whose father was the former Prime Minister of Belize, has a heart for his people.
“All that I have been through in my 42 years on earth has prepared me for this historic moment in time to be able to shoulder this responsibility, to deliver on this opportunity to build my Nation,” he said once he was officially sworn.
Shyne managed to turn a negative situation into a positive one. It sounds like the people of Belize are in good hands.
