Shonda Rhimes To Be Honored With Barbie Doll For Mattel’s International Women’s Day Celebration

Shonda Rhimes will be honored with an exclusive Barbie doll for International Women’s Day.

She took to Instagram on Saturday and announced that she would be getting a Barbie doll that resembles her.

“I have my own Barbie! Proud to be among the 12 amazing women, all of whom are breaking barriers in their respective careers, who have been selected to be honored for #internationalwomensday. Thank you, @barbie! ❤️” she wrote in the caption.

The television creator and other profound female role models were selected to celebrate Mattel’s International Women’s Day-inspired Barbie campaign. Mattel wanted to shed light on women who dominate in film, tech, STEM, and education. With nearly three decades in the business, Rhimes deserves the prestigious honor.

Rhimes, 52, is a screenwriter, author, and producer with several successful ABC series, including ScandalHow to Get Away with Murder, and one of the longest sitcoms on television, Grey’s Anatomy.

The Hollywood producer has inspired other Black women in the business and was recognized for her achievements while making TIME’s influential people’s list twice — in 2007 and 2021. In 2016, she published her award-winning book the “Year Of Yes,” as she opened up and shared intimate details about her life and journey.

In addition to Rhimes, the other female innovators that will be honored this year include: “Ari Horie, founder and CEO of Women’s Startup Lab, and Women’s Startup Lab Impact Foundation; Pat McGrath, founder of Pat McGrath Labs; and Melissa Sariffode, CEO and co-founder of Canada Learning Code and Ladies Learning Code,” the press release stated

“We know that children are inspired by what they see around them, which is why it’s so important for young girls to see themselves reflected in role models who’ve daringly pushed past roadblocks and overcome the Dream Gap to become the brave women they are today,” said Lisa McKnight, Senior Vice President and Global Head of Barbie and Dolls, Mattel. “This International Women’s Day, we’re proud to honor 12 global trailblazing women to help empower the next generation of female leaders by sharing their stories.”

The Barbie Instagram account posted a photo of Rhimes’ exclusive doll and the other dolls set to be released.

“As part of this year’s #InternationalWomensDay celebration, we are honoring 12 global female entrepreneurs and role models with one-of-a-kind #Barbie dolls in their likeness. As leaders in their respective industries of tech, wellness, STEM, education and more, we are continuing our commitment to closing the Dream Gap by inspiring girls around the world to dream big and reminding them they can be anything.

#YouCanBeAnything,” the caption wrote.

Congratulations Queen!
