On Friday, Dr. John Sampson was banned from performing Brazilian Butt Lifts (BBL) in Miami, according to the Miami Herald.
Though it’s the physician’s first act of discipline, Sampson had performed seven illegal procedures from April to June 2021 at Seduction Cosmetic Surgery in Coral Gables, Florida, including a BBL that killed a 33-year-old patient named “E.R.” Sampson reportedly lied on the deceased patient’s paperwork, the Herald reported. She passed away on June 16, 2021.
The surgeon reportedly punctured the woman’s liver and intestines with a cannula as he extracted the fat from E.R.’s stomach. Sampson also allegedly injected the “liquid gold” beneath the gluteal muscle– a no-no in BBL procedures.
Although Sampson was involved in the death of a patient, his license wasn’t revoked by the Florida Board of Medicine. However, he had to pay a $20,000 fine and almost $6,000 in court and investigative costs, perform five hours of continuing education credits for keeping medical records, head a one-hour presentation on liposuction and gluteal fat transfers and can’t be the head doctor at surgery offices in Florida.
The disgraced doctor allegedly was the designated physician at Seduction.
In 2020, the Florida Board of Medicine banned transferring fat beneath the gluteal muscles after it determined that the process attributed to unnecessary deaths of patients.
In June, the board implemented a three BBL procedure max per day per physician. It cited doctor fatigue as the increase in the number of emergency situations or deaths.
Some doctors protested the new rule and attempted to appeal the ruling– to no avail. A Florida court shot down the motion.
“The petitioners (Surgeons for Safety and the doctors) question whether the number of mortalities constitute a sufficient emergency, where there has been no attempt to quantify the total number of procedures,” the decision said. “We do not believe we are in a position to second guess the Board of Medicine’s judgment concerning the number of acceptable deaths involved in purely elective cosmetic surgeries. In addition, the rule contains plausible and rational statements for the requirement it imposes.”
Although Sampson can no longer perform BBL, his Instagram still lists him as a board-certified surgeon with 29 years of experience.
