Tyre Nichols, the 29-year-old father of one, who was brutally beaten to death by five Memphis police officers, might have a skate park named after him in Sacramento, California, after officials unanimously voted on the proposal on March 2.
As previously reported by News Onyx, Nichols had a beautiful passion for the arts, photography, and skateboarding. According to ABC News, the City of Sacramento Parks and Community Enrichment Commission has begun working on renaming a Regency Park skate park in his memorial to commemorate his life. The proposal requests a crafted bronze plaque be added to the park to honor Nichols.
The proposal reads, “Tyre Nichols has a strong connection to the skate park at Regency Park and spent numerous hours of his youth skating and building friendships there. The tragedy of his death has elevated his name to national significance and, as such, underscores his connection and contribution to Sacramento, the community of North Natomas and Regency Park.”
The outlet reported that Sacramento City Councilwoman Lisa Kaplan said, “I would love to see if we can maybe refresh that area and add some features, you know, in honor of Tyre and many of the kids that I see out there,”
There are plans to have a dedication ceremony for Nichols’ would be 30th birthday and celebrate the proposed $20,000 budget for the Tyre Nichols State Park.
As per News Onyx reports, soon after a disturbing video of the fatal beating of Nichols arose, the officers identified: Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills, and Justin Smith – were charged with second-degree murder as well as misconduct charges. All five pled not guilty.
Nichols passed away on January 10, and his mother and father support the stake park’s renaming.
