Russell Wilson settled a deal on Thursday with the Denver Broncos, landing a five-year contract, including a $245 million extension with a $165 million guaranteed payout, ESPN reported.
Wilson landed with the Broncos in a trade back in March, and the team’s general manager George Paton claimed their goal was to sign him to a long-term extension—and it happened. The deal runs through the 2028 season.
Wilson’s $245 million deal became the second-most lucrative contract in NFL history regarding the guaranteed money. He trails behind Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson’s $230 million.
While the 33-year-old quarterback is under a contract with the Broncos, he has two more years of his deal with the Seahawks, earning a salary of $59 million.
Like Paton’s claim about wanting the deal, Wilson said signing with the Broncos was his long-time goal.
“I came here knowing I was going to be ready to play on these two years [left on his contract],” Wilson said. “But I think to be able to get this done before the season, to have it all done, is just a blessing. And it allows us all to be excited.”
He continued, “It’s so important to me…to me, what’s about is to be able to win championships and have enough space on the salary cap so George can work his magic and we can get guys like Randy Gregory…and other great players. We want to make this a destination location.”
In response to her husband’s latest accomplishment, the deal, “Level Up” singer Ciara congratulated her husband on social media.
“Baby @DangeRussWilson, I am so proud of you!” Ciara tweeted. “You’re the most dedicated and hardworking person I know! It’s been so beautiful to see you become a Bronco! So excited for the journey ahead! You’re 1 of 1! My greatest inspiration. I love you so much!”
Wilson took to Twitter to express his gratitude.
