According to CBS New York, Shanice Young had just celebrated her baby shower before she was killed trying to break up a fight in Harlem on Sept. 12. The pregnant 31-year-old was allegedly shot by her ex-boyfriend.
Police claimed that Young was trying to stop an argument. She had just returned home from the baby shower and was unloading the presents from her car around 1 a.m. at W. 128th St and Frederick Douglass Blvd in Harlem.
Young was with her boyfriend and two other children when her ex-boyfriend approached the family in the lobby and shot Young in the face in front of her two children, 15 and 6-years-old. Witnesses said that Young’s ex-boyfriend had chased her current boyfriend through the building trying to shoot him but ended up shooting Young in the face instead. She had been trying to de-escalate the situation, according to authorities.
A woman who said she was the victim’s sister disputed that she was trying to stop an argument.
“She was nine months pregnant. Shanice was a victim,”she said. “Shanice had two daughters and the third one died with her.”
Young was raising her little sister after their mother passed away from cancer one year ago, in addition to her own children. When the police arrived on the scene, they found her lying on the ground between her car and another vehicle. She was unconscious and non-responsive.
The superintendent of the building, Jose Morales, heard the gunshots and saw one police officer attempting to save Young with CPR, to no avail. The police found three shell casings near the scene from a .40-caliber gun. The shooter, who was wearing a mask, is still on the run. The authorities have not released the suspect’s name yet but are asking anyone with pertinent information of his whereabouts to contact CrimeStoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
