Popular Instagram chef, Chef Way, seemingly canceled himself after one of his alleged colorist tweets surface online.
Chef Way, a Houston-based cook born Waymond Wesley, was exposed for allegedly disrespecting dark-skinned Black women on social media in the past. As his old tweets began making rounds on Twitter, many of his followers have been questioning his views on Black girls.
“They sayin’ u the ultra misogynist in ur quotes btw,” @Yasmin_Kobain tweeted to him on Jan. 8.
“Thanks, I reviewed the quote retweets and addressed it,” Chef Way responded.
However, that wasn’t enough, as another user fired back with alleged proof of the popular chef’s anti-Blackness.
“Where did you address it, and how? This is what you put out in the world, for years. How are you addressing it,” user @LOfficielEbony wrote.
The drama began following a recent TikTok video of Chef Way cooking pasta with oxtail on Jan. 7. Along with the clip, he shared a post that said, “Oxtail pasta, applying pressure all 2023.”
His followers then commented on the video mentioning his alleged tweets disrespecting Black women in 2015 and 2016 and accused him of colorist views.
Under a different user name, Wesley reportedly responded to the comments online regarding people who called him out and claimed he “accepted accountability.”
Twitter users weren’t letting him get off that easy, as they continued posting images of him throwing shots at Black woman and even saying “She’s too Black.”
On Jan. 9, he shared an apology on Instagram which racked up 553 likes and said,
“To those, I’ve hurt with my past tweets from 2015 to early 2016 that have resurfaced, I am deeply sorry. That was a moment in my life where I was sick in more ways than one. Cooking saved me,” Chef Way said about being cancelled. “You have watched a flawed [Black] man heal, and who will continue to heal and learn. Thanks for being along for the journey. – Chef Way”
Amid the chef’s alleged colorist remarks, he lost a partnership with culinary company Anova.
“We’re ending our affiliation with chef way, asap. Formal statement coming soon. Thanks for bringing the issue to my attention,” CEO and Founder, of Anova Stephen Svajian.
