Amir Staten, a high school student from Philadelphia, has recently received the life-changing news that he has been accepted to Morehouse College.
17-year-old Staten, who attends Germantown Friends School in Philadelphia, went viral for a video of him reacting to getting accepted to Atlanta’s prestigious HBCU Morehouse.
Morehouse shared the viral video of Amir’s reaction to receiving his acceptance letter on his Instagram.
The HBCU quoted the post, “BIG FRIDAY ENERGY! Welcome to The House, Amir! The class of 2027 continues to assemble. Take this joy and sprint into your weekend!”
When asked how Amir felt in the moment, he responded, “It kinda felt like gravity didn’t exist anymore. When I saw the congratulations. I threw my phone on the seat and jumped out of the car.”
“Morehouse is a place where you can go to find a whole bunch of Black men with the same goal. It’s a school with a lot of positive male influence,” Amir added. “And it’s cool to be smart. And what do they say? We’re young, gifted and Black.”

According to Chestnut Hill Local, Amir wishes to study sociology with the goal of one day becoming a social worker to help other troubled families.
“My life goal is I want to be a positive impact on anybody I encounter in life,” Amir said.
Christopher Booth of Mt. Airy, former president of the Philadelphia Morehouse Alumni Association, said, “I am very excited for him. It’s not just about the academics at Morehouse, [which is an all-male school]. It’s the whole experience. It’s like a fraternity, and when you walk out, you really feel empowered.”
