A Pennsylvania restaurant called the Aviation Inn found itself in hot water after it came out that an employee printed a receipt with a racial slur on it for a woman picking up her order, according to a May 26 WTAJ report.
The customer, identified as Kassie, picked up her food order from the Aviation Inn and reported when she received her receipt that the words “n**** chik” were in the description section of her receipt. Once she noticed, she called to speak with a manager about it. Allen Butterbaugh, a manager, explained that an employee had written it as an alleged “joke.”
Kassie said that he continued to say that the employee told him “he’s not racist, so he could do that, justifying it by saying he hangs out with minorities, so he’s a ‘brother.’” Butterbaugh said that after seeing it, he was “Completely blown away, and my first thought is, ‘This is crazy.’ This is absolutely not good. This is terrible.”
The Aviation Inn went to Facebook to post an apology for the incident to stop some of the “backlash” they were getting. They wrote,
“The staff member has been reprimanded for this behavior. We have never or ever will condone discrimination of any form based on color/ethnicity/gender/sexual orientation. We have worked over the last ten years of ownership to create a culture of diversity in this establishment.”“It is our hope that forgiveness can still be found in our society today as we all work together in our communities to stop hate of any kind. Please accept our sincere apology, and we look forward to continue serving you.”
The NAACP President, Andrae Holsey, told WTAJ that the apology was insufficient to make up for what happened. Holsey said, “I hear through the grapevine that the employee was not terminated until WTAJ called, which is interesting. I believe the apology could’ve been more thorough. Just saying that ‘I promote diversity and I hire minorities’ isn’t enough.”
