Naomi Osaka Is Donating Tennis Tournament Proceeds to Haiti Earthquake Relief Efforts

According to CBS News, a devastating earthquake hit the Caribbean island nation of Haiti on August 14.

The same day, tennis champ Naomi Osaka announced that all the prize earnings from her upcoming tennis tournament would go towards Haiti’s earthquake relief efforts.

The tennis star made the announcement via Twitter while expressing her grief over the devastation it’s caused on the island.

“Really hurts to see all the devastation that’s going on in Haiti, and I feel like we really can’t catch a break,” wrote Osaka, who is half Haitian by way of her father. “I’m about to play a tournament this week, and I’ll give all the prize money to relief efforts for Haiti. I know our ancestors is blood is strong. We’ll keep rising.”

Over the weekend, Haiti was hit with a 7.2 magnitude earthquake. By the next day, the death toll topped 700 as, and more than 2,800 were injured as a cause of the disaster, according to Haiti’s Office of Civil Protection.

This terrible natural disaster comes just one month after the violent assassination of the nation’s president, Jovenel Moise, who was 

killed in a raid on his residence.

Concerning the tournament she’s referred to, the tournament’s winner stands to earn $255,220, according to TMZ. The runner-up will earn $188,945 and each semi-finalist will get $100,250.
