NBA star Kyrie Irving has donated $65,000 to the family of the Black woman killed during a birthday Mexico Trip, Shanquella Robinson.
According to Yahoo News, Kyrie donated the generous amount to Shanquella’s family in two payments: one for $50,000 and another for $15,000. He did so via a GoFundMe page on Nov. 18.
The young woman’s sister, Quilla Long, launched the GoFundMe page on Nov. 17 as the family needed funds to cover funeral expenses and legal fees.
“My beautiful sister Shanquella Robinson recently went on a trip to Cabo, Mexico, with people she believed were her friends,” she wrote. “During this trip, she was found dead. Her associates claimed she died of alcohol poisoning. Still, the death certificate from the Mexican government contradicts this statement as it reveals a broken neck and cracked spine and a time of death 15 minutes after she sustained these injuries.”
As News Onyx reported, the victim went to the Latin American country with six supposed friends to celebrate a birthday. Less than 24 hours after they arrived, a viral video recorded by an individual in the group revealed a naked Shanquella being brutally beaten by another woman in the villa. Her so-called friends reportedly condoned the fight.
“Get up! I’m tired of your sh*t!” the vicious attacker was allegedly seen shouting at her on video.
A death certificate listed Shanquella’s cause of death as a severe spinal cord injury. However, Mexican authorities have insisted that there’s no “real” evidence suggesting she was murdered, nor have they issued any arrest warrants. Her father, Bernard Robinson, on the other hand, believes she was set up.
In a tearful interview with TMZ, Bernard described the savage incident as a “physical altercation” and said the suspects “attacked her.” He added that his daughter wasn’t the fighting type, as shown by her innocence in the situation. Overall, he believed the attackers’ behavior was all part of a deliberate plot.
“It just seems like that was a plot because they couldn’t have done that here where all her friends are. It wouldn’t have went down like that,” he said. “They put a whole in my heart. That was my only child. I can’t even be a granddaddy, can’t even walk her down the aisle…can’t even hear her say ‘daddy.'”
Shanquella’s funeral was held at Macedonia Baptist Church on November 19. Mexican officials and the FBI are investigating her death as a homicide.
