Myrohn Guthrie, a mother and Kansas City, Kansas native, had her home emptied of all its belongings by Gateway Plaza Townhomes’ leasing office over the weekend, leaving her with a total loss of $32,000.
According to The Shade Room, Guthrie decided to visit the townhome to get some sweaters for her children in the home, but instead, she came home to an empty house.
“I went in there, and it was nothing like it was absolutely nothing,” Guthrie told The Shade Room via a phone conversation. “At first, I don’t know what I thought. I still ran upstairs to look, to see if my stuff was up there.”

Since the townhome didn’t appear to be burglarized, Guthrie’s first instinct was to call her mother and ask if she knew where her belongings were or if she’d gotten a notice from the leasing office. Her mother denied both.
“…I did not call the police because there was no forced entry into my home,” Guthrie said. “I already felt like my apartment complex was shady. I just knew it was them.”
Guthrie had reportedly last visited the townhouse approximately a week before the incident. She told the outlet that she often stays at her mother’s home with her kids because her mom helps with childcare while working a full-time job.
At the time of the incident, Guthrie was only gone for about three days before returning to an empty home after working an overtime shift.
Guthrie was able to speak to the leasing office on October 25 and confronted them about emptying her place. After initially denying it with an attitude that Guthrie described as “super dismissive” and “super mean,” she insisted it had to be them who got in and emptied her house.
Eventually, the leasing office employees admitted that they had made a clerical error and said it was a “huge mistake.”
They had allegedly confused her apartment with another that was supposed to be cleaned out.
The leasing office then told Guthrie that if she made a list of items, they would reimburse her for items in the home, not including gifts. Her list totaled $32,000, the leasing office then questioned her list, to which she replied to but she never heard from them again.
“I literally haven’t even figured out where to start,” Guthrie said. “They haven’t asked ‘do you or your kids have somewhere to stay, do you have food do you have clothes?” ‘she added, according to Fox 4.
As of October 27, Guthrie broke her leasing agreement with Gateway Plaza Homes, is moving into a new apartment, and has hired lawyers to help her with the process.
Guthrie has created a GoFundMe to secure funds since she doesn’t have renters’ insurance and requires assistance in paying for furniture, kitchen necessities, bathroom essentials, and new clothing for their family.
A representative from Seldin Company, Gateway Plaza’s mother company, said they are currently investigating and working toward a resolution for Guthrie.
