Vice President Kamala Harris made history on Nov. 19 as the first Black and Asian woman with presidential powers. Harris was given presidential powers for 85 minutes after President Joe Biden underwent a colonoscopy.
Biden had the procedure at the Walter Reed Medical Center. During such procedures, it is customary for the President to temporarily transfer presidential powers to the vice president.
Biden wrote a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont just before he underwent anesthesia advising them of the transfer of power to Harris, per the 25th Amendment, section 3 of the US Constitution.
“Today I will undergo a routine medical procedure requiring sedation. In view of present circumstances, I have determined to transfer temporarily the powers and duties of the office of President of the United States to the Vice President during the brief period of the procedure and recovery,” wrote Biden.
While #President Joe Biden underwent a colonoscopy, he transferred power to Vice-President #KamalaHarris making her the first woman to be acting president in the history of the U.S.
