John “Biggie” Levestone was stabbed to death by his girlfriend, who refused to let him back into the apartment they shared in New York’s Bronx housing projects.
On April 22, Earth Day 2023, Levestone, who sometimes slept in the same fourth-floor stairwell, was stabbed by his girlfriend, Crystal Fryson, at about 10:30 p.m. in the Highbridge Gardens Houses, the New York Daily News reported.
The Bronx couple was reportedly in love, at least according to the victim’s brother, who said Levestone loved her.
“He told me he loved her with all his heart,” the victim’s brother, Shaun Levestone, told the Daily News. “He wanted to marry that girl. He was trying to make a family. That’s all he wanted was a family. He wanted to share his love.”
PIX11, citing the New York Police Department, reported that John was taken to the hospital but did not survive.
The stabbing was recorded by a Ring home security system and shows John begging Fryson to enter her apartment minutes before she stabbed him in the torso.
The tragic love story of a troubled girlfriend and her tall, local DJ boyfriend made the front page of the April 24 edition of the New York Daily News.
An unnamed source told The Daily News that told the couple had “an ongoing-abuse type situation.”
“She was the couldn’t-be-bothered type and he was a take-me-back type,” a neighbor told the New York hometown paper. “She would hang out with him if he had a few dollars in his pocket and if he didn’t he slept in the hall.”
Fryson was hospitalized the following Monday while awaiting arraignment on murder, manslaughter and weapons charges in Bronx Criminal Court.
Those who knew John said he was the “life of the party” at his neighborhood gatherings.
“We lost one of our Black kings,” Shaun said. “John was a loving man. He would give you the shirt off his back. … He loved playing music. He volunteered at the church. … It hurts me, you took my brother and I can’t do nothing.”
John is survived by three of the children he shared with Fryson, but reports suggest he is not the biological father.
The Daily News reported that some of the children were present during the stabbing, and one child was captured on Ring video standing in the doorway looking down the hallway.
“I want justice not just for John and my family, but I want justice for them kids,” Shaun Levestone said. “Those three is suffering just as much as us.”
