A Jackson State University student died in a vehicle in a parking lot on campus after he was shot Friday morning.
The school’s president, Thomas K. Hudson, announced the death of 22-year-old Flynn Brown in a written statement.
“It is with a heavy heart that I can confirm the death of a JSU student,” Hudson wrote. “The loss of a young person is always a devastating circumstance for our campus community. Our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time.”

Bailey Martin, Press Secretary for the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, confirmed to WLBT News that police took 20-year-old Randall Smith into custody for his connection to the murder. Smith’s motives are currently unknown.
Brown was a football player who wasn’t on JSU’s football team but had a roster spot for the next season. Prior to attending JSU, Brown attended Lackawanna College in Scranton, Pennsylvania, where he played football. Brian O’Conner, his former high school coach at Mount Olive High School, announced his death while sending his thoughts and prayers to the young football player’s family.
“It is with a heavy heart that I am sad to say the Mt Olive community and football family have lost one of their own,” O’Conner’s words read. “Flynn Brown was killed yesterday morning while attending Jackson St. More info to come when I have. Thoughts and prayers to the Brown family.”
