We guess Deion Sanders is SWAC, after all. The Jackson State University head football coach was named SWAC Coach Of The Year for the second year in a row.
According to the Jackson Clarion Ledger, Sanders, aka Coach Prime, was named SWAC Coach Of The Year for a second time on Nov. 29, as he was initially awarded the honor in 2021. He reportedly led JSU to the first 11-0 season in program history and has a 22-2 overall record with the Tigers in two seasons as head coach. His record included a 16-0 record in SWAC play in the past two seasons.
In addition to Sanders’ latest honor, his son, JSU quarterback Shedeur, was awarded Offensive Player Of The Year and is a finalist for the Walter Payton Award given to the FCS Offensive Player of the Year. He reportedly set the Mississippi-based HBCU’s single-season records with 32 TD passes, 284 completions and 3,083 passing yards.
Surprisingly, Sanders didn’t post much about his new accomplishment but shared an interesting Instagram post instead.
“When you don’t move like everybody else, it bothers people,” he wrote in the post. In its caption, he added, “Be the best You and not the 2nd best version of someone else. I’ve always moved different, and I’m too Grown to change now because my moves work! #CoachPrime “I’m Prime”
Just a few weeks prior, he made headlines for banning JSU players from leaving a Houston hotel following rapper Takeoff’s untimely death.
“Takeoff was right murdered in a dice game in Houston–where we’re going,” he said in another Instagram post. “So, that eliminates all y’all leaving that hotel, [b]ecause it ain’t happening until I give you further notice. So, whatever her name is, whoever she is, parents, everybody–[they’re] gonna come to the hotel and visit you because y’all ain’t leaving [this time].”
On Dec. 1, he shared a post in celebration of his son, Deion Sanders Jr.’s 29th birthday.
“Happy birthday to my son @deionsandersjr #CoachPrime @gojsutigersfb – Also, Happy Birthday @lil.errick_6 and proud to elevate u to the new Locker room. ( posted by @deionsandersjr).”
