NBA star Iman Shumpert has been arrested for felony marijuana possession at Dallas’ Fort Worth International Airport.
Shumpert was arrested for allegedly having a “sizeable” amount of marijuana in his backpack at the Dallas airport on July 30. A police report indicated that he was placed in handcuffs and brought to jail without incident after officers responded to a potential drug violation call. Airport officials made the call following a TSA screener’s claims that they found a plastic baggy filled with a “green leafy substance” in the 2016 NBA champion’s bag, which he admitted was weed.
Officers said the green substance weighed 6.12 ounces and tested positive for marijuana via a mobile test.
Shumpert reportedly explained to police that he was concerned about missing his trip to visit his daughter, as he was scheduled to board a Delta plane to Los Angeles. However, the responding cop told him that since he was being arrested for marijuana possession, he wouldn’t be able to make his flight. If convicted, the 32-year-old could face up to two years in jail and a $10,000 fine as the charge is classified as a “State Jail Felony.”
Shumpert seems unfazed by the incident, as he’s been active on social media since his arrest. On Aug. 3, he shared a video clip of his recent interview with the Uninterrupted
podcast–co-founded by NBA all-star Lebron James–via Instagram.“Sometimes, you have to step out of the box you’ve put yourself in. @ImanShumpert reflects on his journey to being #MoreThanAnAthlete on a new episode of #ImanAmongstMen,” the post’s caption said.
Shumpert last played for the Brooklyn Nets in 2020-21; previously, he played for the New York Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Sacramento Kings and Houston Rockets over his ten-year career. He’s currently married to R&B singer, dancer, and actress Teyana Taylor who wed him in 2016. The couple shares two beautiful children: six-year-old Junie Shumpert and one-year-old Rue Shumpert.
