An investigation is underway on Howard University’s campus after Black fraternity and sorority sites were defaced on Wednesday.
Photos of the vandalism surfaced on social media, with many people condemning the act. A Twitter user posted pictures of the sites and called whoever did it “lame” and hoped the university would look into it.
“How lame do you have to be to vandalize historical stones and trees on a university campus,” the tweet began. “A campus where the MOST D9 organizations were founded? Y’all really weird as hell. Vandalizing Howard’s yard is lame.”

D9, short for the Divine 9, refers to the umbrella of historically Black fraternities and sororities, of which five of the Greek-lettered organizations were established at Howard University. The organization sites that were vandalized are Delta Sigma Theta, Kappa Alpha Psi, and Alpha Kappa Alpha.
Hope @HowardU looks into this seriously. Our organizations have a long standing history on this campus, and the world tbh. And MOST of our orgs started right here. pic.twitter.com/xPOnrOE9Jz

In a statement to The Hilltop, Howard said that the school is aware of the crime and called it “senseless.”
“The University is aware that some of the Divine Nine Greek-lettered organizational plots located on the Main Yard have been defaced,” the university said. “These senseless acts of vandalism are unacceptable and run contrary to the values of respect and tolerance that we as an institution strive to uphold.
The vandalism, ironically, comes after many HBCUs, including Howard, received bomb threats during Black History Month.
While the culprit has yet to be revealed, many people like the HBCU Buzz call this a “hate crime.”
“Recently, Greek plots on the campus of Howard University were vandalized. At least three plots on the university’s yard have been destroyed in — what we are calling — a disgusting, HBCU hate crime.”
