A Mississippi family needs financial assistance and prayers after a tornado ripped them from their home and demolished it, killing a 2-year-old granddaughter and injuring the rest of the family.
According to Abril Grant, who created a GoFundMe campaign for her family, the tornado struck their hometown, Silver City, MS, last Friday. The owners of the damaged house were her aunt and uncle, who had their daughters (13 and 12), a 2-year-old granddaughter and an 8-year-old grandson living with them.
The tornado tossed the family members from the home when it swept through, causing her aunt to suffer trauma to her face and be transported to the hospital. Her uncle and the two daughters received minor injuries but had to emerge through the debris. The 8-year-old boy was taken to the ICU to be treated for his severe injuries, but the 2-year-old baby girl didn’t survive.
“…they have lost everything and are starting from ground zero,” Grant wrote in the GoFundMe. “they are in need of funds to go towards getting a new home as well as to bury their granddaughter.”
Grant concluded, “We appreciate any and all assistance. Thank you so much!”
The campaign was created on Monday with a $200,000 goal. So far, $17,910 have been raised.
According to several reports, the tornado caused over two dozen deaths in the city and Rolling Fork, MS.
The NAACP partnered with Red Cross, Democratic Rep. Bennie G. Thompson and local unit leaders to raise funds that would go toward their relief efforts and assist them in supporting families impacted by the catastrophic event.
