Model, socialite, and media personality Hailey Bieber was recently dragged by Black and Latino women for cultural appropriation over the âbrownie glazed lipsâ craze.
According to Glamour, Hailey faced backlash from Black and Latino women after she shared a TikTok video of herself doing what she called âthe lip combo vibeâ sheâs âfeeling for fall.â The look, which she dubbed âbrownie glazed lips,â is brown liner around her lips with a clear gloss over it, which creates a glazed effectâa look that was specifically popular among Black and Latino girls and women during the â90s.
The TikTok clip hit Twitter, and users had a field day calling Hailey out and other white TikTokers whoâve been participating in the craze.
âBrownie glazed lips is a âHailey Bieberâ look?! As if that s**t was invented by her⌠All of these women right here have that same lip look, and all of these photos are from the 90s, sweetheart. Aaliyah, Nia Long, Lil Kim & Bianca Lawson, thank you!!!! GTFO. #sorrynotsorry,â @beliebmakaveli_ tweeted.
âWhite ppl calling brown lip liner w clear gloss hailey Bieber lips or brownie glazed lips⌠Hailey didnât do s**t!! Black and Hispanic women have done this combo way before,â @lisasdevotion wrote.
âBrownie glazed lips?? bffr,â @glambymykaila said.
âWtf is brownie glazed lips..ppl canât ever give Chicanas nor any POC credit where itâs due until itâs a yt doing it,â @dvndykvthy tweeted.
Haileyâs video is one of many showing off the beauty and makeup techniques featuring her Rhode Skin products, which typically go viral in a matter of minutes. However, despite the clipâs popularity, women of color felt she had gone too far with this one.
âGirl, admit where you really got this from [eye-roll emoji],â @CheryshYourFace wrote on TikTok.
âMy momma been doin this in her younger days,â @Estephane Gomez said.
âOur tias are laughing [laughing emojis],â @Jessy commented.
Hailey hasnât addressed the criticisms, as she recently posted a Rhode ad via Instagram featuring the gloss in her âbrownie glazed lipâ clip.
