Model, socialite, and media personality Hailey Bieber was recently dragged by Black and Latino women for cultural appropriation over the “brownie glazed lips” craze.
According to Glamour, Hailey faced backlash from Black and Latino women after she shared a TikTok video of herself doing what she called “the lip combo vibe” she’s “feeling for fall.” The look, which she dubbed “brownie glazed lips,” is brown liner around her lips with a clear gloss over it, which creates a glazed effect–a look that was specifically popular among Black and Latino girls and women during the ’90s.
@haileybieber the lip combo vibe I’m feeling for fall 😍🤎 @rhode skin
The TikTok clip hit Twitter, and users had a field day calling Hailey out and other white TikTokers who’ve been participating in the craze.
“Brownie glazed lips is a ‘Hailey Bieber’ look?! As if that s**t was invented by her… All of these women right here have that same lip look, and all of these photos are from the 90s, sweetheart. Aaliyah, Nia Long, Lil Kim & Bianca Lawson, thank you!!!! GTFO. #sorrynotsorry,” @beliebmakaveli_ tweeted.

Hailey’s video is one of many showing off the beauty and makeup techniques featuring her Rhode Skin products, which typically go viral in a matter of minutes. However, despite the clip’s popularity, women of color felt she had gone too far with this one.
“Girl, admit where you really got this from [eye-roll emoji],” @CheryshYourFace wrote on TikTok.
“My momma been doin this in her younger days,” @Estephane Gomez said.
“Our tias are laughing [laughing emojis],” @Jessy commented.
Hailey hasn’t addressed the criticisms, as she recently posted a Rhode ad via Instagram featuring the gloss in her “brownie glazed lip” clip.
