Florida man, Haider Rana, has been arrested over a year after claiming self-defense in the fatal shooting of his Black female lover who knocked on his door while he was home with an “exotic stripper.”
According to Miami Herald, Miami police arrested Rana for second-degree murder with a firearm on Nov. 18. He’s currently being held with no bond.
“This guy knew my daughter was coming. She had been calling for him for two days. He got angry because my daughter kept calling and texting. He was with another girl in the room,” the victim’s mother, Jonell Jackson-Manu, told the outlet.
Authorities said Rana fatally shot Maame Amuah–his alleged lover–whom he had an intimate relationship with, just seconds after she knocked on his condo door while he was watching tv with a stripper. The young man initially said he shot her in self-defense, telling police that a stranger knocked and “pushed the door open.”
The stripper, identified as popular Miami club King Of Diamonds dancer Abi-Gail Dwyer, told officers that she heard a loud knock five minutes later. The second knock prompted Rana to grab his weapon, walk to the door, and open it. At that moment, Dwyer told police, she heard gunfire.
Rana’s lawyers claimed Amuah called him over 12 times in the 24 hours leading up to her untimely death in May 2021. During his bond hearing, his defense attorney said he responded to “an unknown assailant on the other side of the door at his apartment banging on the door multiple times at nearly one in the morning.”
“He’s asking, ‘who’s there, who’s there,’ and no answer. The moment he cracks the door open to see if there’s someone hiding underneath the eye hole, the door gets kicked open, the assailant comes in, and he takes one shot,” his attorney said.
However, local prosecutors refuted the claims after several months of investigation.
“I told her to be careful about this guy,” Jackson-Manu said.
Amuah had reportedly moved to the U.S. from Ghana in 2016 and began dating Rana around a month before she was killed. The two reportedly did business with each other after Rana moved from New York to Miami in 2020.
