The 10-year-old Florida girl accused of fatally shooting a woman fighting with her mother on Memorial Day has been taken into custody.
Orlando police arrested the unnamed young girl on Jun. 7, but prosecutors haven’t officially decided if they will pursue a case against her. At the moment, she is being held at a juvenile detention center.
“This is one of the most tragic cases I have seen in my 22-year career,” Florida Ninth Judicial Circuit State Attorney Monique H. Worrell said in a statement released on Jun. 7. “Our office has started the process of reviewing this case, and will consider all of the facts, including the age of the child and all of the surrounding circumstances when making a charging decision.”
Worrell added that “no charging decision has been made” and reminded the public that despite their feelings, the suspect is “still a child.”
“We want to be clear in stating that no charging decision has been made by our office. However, we anticipate that whatever charges we eventually file, if any, will ensure she receives the interventions necessary to address her behavior, help her change and grow, and ensure the public’s safety going forward. We encourage the public to remember—no matter your feelings surrounding this tragedy—this is still a child.”
The 10-year-old allegedly shot and killed Lashun Rodgers, 41, who was engaged in a physical altercation with her mother, Lakrisha Issac, 31, at a cookout in Orlando. Isaac reportedly handed her daughter a bag containing a gun during the fight, and moments later, the girl fired two shots at Rodgers, striking her in the head.
Police said Rodgers’ boyfriend tried to break up the altercation, but she broke free. He added that he heard the young girl shout, “She shouldn’t have hit my momma,” before she pulled the trigger.
The 41-year-old was rushed to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where she died.
Isaac is currently facing charges of manslaughter by culpable negligence, aggravated assault with a gun, negligent storage of a firearm, and neglect of a child from the incident.
