Maryland 11-year-old Laprentis Doughty recently ran into a burning apartment building to save his two-year-old sister and said he’d “risk” his life for her.
According to 11Alive, Laprentis rescued his little sister, Loyalty Doughty, as she was trapped inside a burning apartment on the 1300 block of Jersey Road in Salisbury. A news release from the Office Of The State Fire Marshal indicated that the Nov. 22 blaze began after an electrical fire sparked an outlet in the apartment bedroom.
“If I didn’t save my sister, I would be mad at myself because I could’ve saved her easily,” the courageous 11-year-old told reporters. He continued, gushing about his love for Loyalty and that he’d risk his life for her.
“I could have saved her, and I would risk my life for my sister,” he said.
Once the Maryland boy realized there was a fire in the Salisbury apartment, he immediately ran out of the building. However, he quickly realized that his little sister was still inside and, as such, ran back in to rescue her. Authorities confirmed that he sustained minor burns during his act of heroism, but thankfully, they didn’t require on-site medical attention.
The news release shared that over 12 firefighters responded to the fire and put it out within 10 minutes of their arrival. The blaze reportedly caused about $250,000 in damage to the apartment building and an additional $40,000 in damage to its contents. Two of its eight units are also unlivable due to the damage, but Laprentis, Loyalty and their mother, Keishauna Banks, are physically okay.
Salisbury Mayor Jake Days recognized Laprentis and took the time to point out his bravery.
“As a mayor, I’m always looking for citizens who are selfless, citizens who are willing to lead, and we’ve got one right here,” he said about the young boy.
Keishauna has created a GoFundMe page for donations to assist the family. So far, she’s raised $13,875 of her $25,000 goal.
