Eighteen-year-old Jaylen Smith has become the nation’s youngest elected mayor.
The recent high school graduate became the mayor of Earle, Arkansas, on December 6. Jaylen announced his remarkable victory via Facebook.
“Citizens of Earle, Arkansas, it’s official!! I am your newly elected Mayor of Earle, Arkansas. It’s Time to Build a Better Chapter of Earle, Arkansas. I would like to thank all my supporters for stepping up, getting people to the polls. I am truly grateful for you all,” he wrote.
Jaylen’s role as the town’s leader is set to begin in January, according to Local 12 News. Earle residents cast their votes, and with 218 votes– Jaylen proved victorious. His opponent, Nemi Matthews, Sr., lost by 79 votes. The town’s population consists of 1,785 people as of 2021. The rural town has a 72% Black population.
WKRC reported that Nemi gave his “friend” heartfelt congratulations. And he took his loss in stride.
“No animosity, anything, for as me and Jaylen are concerned,” he expressed. “Everything has been cordial. If I can help him do anything, I’ll do it, and likewise with him.”
On December 11, the mayor-elect constituents for trusting the teen with their community.
His dedication and inspiring spirit shine through in his social media posts.
“I’m on the verge of something Big! Something mind-blowing, and I can sense it in the Spirit! I am convinced I am not the only one. You, too, are at the eve of one of the greatest seasons of your life. Everything you’ve gone through is about to make sense. Stay focused. Remain still in His presence completely content until His will is made known to you. Trust me! The attacks upon you are confirmation that the enemy is nervous. You are closer than you have ever been!”
On Wednesday, Earle’s youngest mayor will appear on The Jennifer Hudson Show.
