Three sisters in Cass County, Texas, were found dead in their neighbor’s private pond a day after being reported missing in July 2022. Police ruled they died by drowning. However, a medical examiner ruled strangulation as the cause of death for the children.
According to the Texarkana Gazette, the medical examiner found signs of strangulation and “lacerations” on their faces.
Zi’Ariel Oliver, 9, Amiyah Hughes, 8, and Te’Mari Oliver, 5, were reported missing by their babysitter and cousin on July 29, 2022, around 9 p.m. She watched them and their three other siblings while their mom was working.
The Cass County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Parks and Wildlife and Cass County Emergency Services searched the area for the girls. They discovered evidence that pointed them 200 yards away from the sisters’ home to a neighbor’s property, specifically the pond, located off Highway 77 and west of Atlanta.
“A pair of shoes was found at the pond’s edge, leading investigators to search the water,” Sheriff Larry Rowe said.
Around 3 a.m. on July 30, the Sheriff’s department sent in the Bowie County dive team to see if they could find the girls, and they did.
The situation is being treated as a homicide investigation. Police have collected statements from witnesses and are conducting DNA tests.

A GoFundMe was created to help the mother of the three victims, Shommaonique Oliver-Wickerson.
“This was so unexpected and a big hurt and shock to myself and my family. We are now asking for help to lay my sweet [angels]
to rest. Whatever you can donate will be appreciated,” the fundraiser read. “Nashonda Henderson, who is my best friend, is handling the fundraiser. Shommaonique Wickerson is the recipient. All donations will go to her and her other children in the form of a check. The rest of the money will help her & her other three kids.”
