Three carjackers had their plans foiled after they chose a victim who was skilled in mixed martial arts and owned a car with a manual transmission.
The three Virginia men first attempted to hit the victim with a wooden stick. However, their efforts proved unfruitful when the MMA expert exercised his ability to defend himself.
When they tried to get away in the victim’s car, the carjacker behind the wheel could not drive the stick shift.
Multiple callers contacted the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office and reported a disturbance at the Anytime Fitness at 25 Tech Parkway, reported WUSA.
During the physical assault on the man, one of the suspects was able to get a hold of his car keys and jumped behind the wheel, only to find that the car was powered by a manual transmission.
The delay caused other gym attendees to emerge and lend a hand in trying to stop the attempted carjacking. The suspects got back into their own car and fled.
A deputy quickly spotted them and led officers on a high-speed chase that reached nearly 100 miles per hour before they crashed through barriers on the highway and were driving against traffic. They eventually stopped on their own.
Officers used K-9 assistance to find the suspects who fled into heavy brush. Two surrendered, and one attempted to outrun the dog. However, much like the carjacking, it was a futile attempt.
Jabez Clark,19; Korey Richardson, 18; and Jacob Land, 20, were booked into the Rappahannock Regional Jail and held without bond. Land was taken to the hospital for a dog bite before being transported to jail.
According to news reports, the carjackers attempted the feat because they were running out of gas in their car and decided to take someone else’s.
