Lawrence Hyde has been arrested in the death of his cousin, Cori Lowe, after he stabbed him during an intense fight in the Bronx, New York.
On Tuesday night, Lowe was found unconscious and unresponsive in his apartment having suffered several stab wounds, the New York Post reported.
He was rushed to the hospital where he later died from his injuries.
Initially, authorities reported that Lowe and Hyde had gotten into a fight that turned violent. However, the New York Daily News reported an exclusive that makes the incident much more melancholy.
Lowe was still processing grief from the death of his brother, Duval Lowe, who died after he accidentally slipped between two subway cars on July 31. Officers were able to find him eventually, however, he succumbed to his injuries.
Meanwhile, Hyde, who had been showing signs of mental decline over the past several months, began making cryptic social media posts that alarmed his family, including his cousin.
Twelver hours before Hyde stabbed Lowe, he posted, “Please don’t frame me for murder,” and “I know why all of this is happening. It’s ALWAYS the ones closest to u!”
When the victim visited his troubled cousin out of concern for his welfare later that night, he was stabbed to death.
Lowe, the father of a two-year-old son, had been determined to spend more time with his child after the loss of his brother.
Emily Smith, the mother of Lowe’s son, said that visited his cousin as a peacemaker and that fighting was not a part of his personality.
“He’s not the type of person to be physical or start fights,” Smith said of Lowe. “He barely got over the grief of losing his brother, so for him to be in that type of situation, it doesn’t make any sense.”
Hyde engaged in a brief standoff with law enforcement on the ledge of the building but surrendered without incident. He was arrested and first taken to a local psychiatric hospital. He has since been charged with murder.
