Surveillance footage showed the moment British police officers surrounded a car driven by Callum Lother and forced him out of the vehicle.
The incident occurred around 4 am local time on September 30 in Birmingham, a city in England, per Metro.
In a clip obtained by Metro, Lother drives down a street as three other vehicles trail him. When Lother stopped the car, a van and two other cars surrounded him. At least seven West Midlands Police officers appeared and surrounded Lother’s car. They break out the windows, and he is eventually pulled out of the passenger side window.
“As soon as the van boxed me in, I put my hands in the air because I did not want to get shot. I was scared,” the 23-year-old told Metro.
“Police just started smashing my car – they were going for the windows and knocking their guns against my car. Then they decided to come to the passenger window and pull me through the passenger seat. That is when I cut my hand, and glass went in my foot,” Lother added.
He insists he did not resist during the ordeal because he wanted to make it home to his family.
“Confused as I was, I did not once resist as I just wanted to go home to make sure my mother, my pregnant sister and other sister were okay,” he told Metro.
Lother claims he was thrown in a police van, where he was left bleeding for three hours. The police never found anything incriminating.
“This resulted in a deep cut on my hand – which I’ve had to get stitches for – and many other minor cuts on my body,” he told Birmingham Live.
He requested medical assistance but didn’t receive it until West Midlands Police was done searching his home.
“After a while, they explained they had some intelligence that I was in possession of a firearm and had two warrants out to raid my home,” he said.
According to Birmingham Live, the officers reportedly broke Lother’s phone during the incident, which cost him more than £400 ($543) to replace. The damage to his car cost him an additional £1,000 ($1,358). Lother co-owns a Jamaican restaurant with his mother but has not been able to work due to his injuries. Lother and his family also paid an emotional price.
“At the moment, my mum, my pregnant sister and my brother are all struggling to sleep. Even I am as well,” he said. “I am awake 24/7. It is just scary because people could just come back.”
A West Midlands Police spokesperson confirmed the department is aware of the incident.
“We are looking into the actions of our officers,” the rep said in a statement to Metro. “But at this stage, have not received a complaint about their conduct.”
