An off-duty California deputy turned himself in after allegedly murdering a married couple in their home on Wednesday in Dublin, California.
KRON 4 reported that Alameda County Sheriff Deputy’s name is Devin Williams Jr.; he worked at the facility he’s being held in without bond. According to reports, Williams worked a double shift at the Santa Rita Jail. When his shift ended at 11 p.m., he reportedly arrived at his victims’ house, 57-year-old Benison Tran and his 42-year-old wife, Maria, located on the 3100 block of Colebrook Lane.
Williams allegedly broke into the Trans’ house with a firearm around midnight and fatally shot the couple. Dublin Police Chief Garrett Holmes claimed witnesses called about an intruder possessing a firearm and killing two people. It was also reported that an adult and child were in the home at the time of the killing but made it out unharmed physically.
Gabriela Gonzalez was a neighbor of Benison and Maria but didn’t know them. However, she saw the car flee the scene after the murder.
“I saw the car turn on, and it sped just down this down the lane and took a sharp turn,” Gonzalez said. “Within five minutes of that car turning, the one squad car arrived, and after he got out, my windows were open. So, I heard him say I’ve got two down.”
For 11 hours, Williams had police on a chase until he finally called and spoke to Holmes for about 45 minutes, agreeing to turn himself in. Many officers wondered what went wrong and prompted Lt. Ray Kelly to do a background check to see what was bothering him.
“Somewhere in the last several months of his life, some significant events happened that led up to this moment,” Kelly said. “A lot of those events went undiscovered and undisclosed.”
Williams’ mom, Anitra, claimed it was because her son and Maria were romantically involved after they met at a John George Psychiatric Hospital, where Maria was his nurse.
“She told him she loved him; they were on a 10-day trip,” Anitra said and added that she warned him to steer clear from her because she felt something was off about Maria since they had been dating in January.
She said Maria presented “herself as an unmarried woman” and claimed she introduced herself as a “35-year-old single parent who was divorced.”
Williams’ mother said she doesn’t condone what her son did.
