In 1989, he was arrested at the tender age of 15, along with Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Raymond Santana, and Korey Wise. In a climate of fear and anger, police rounded up Black and Latino men and boys for questioning, and former President Donald Trump, then a prominent real estate executive, advocated for the return of the death penalty in a series of newspaper ads.

It wasn’t until over two decades later that DNA evidence conclusively proved their innocence, leading to the overturning of their convictions.
