Thirty-three-year-old Stuart D. Jeffries was killed in a police station parking lot during a custody exchange.
On Sunday, Jan. 16, Jeffries had gone to drop off his eight-year-old daughter when his ex-wife’s boyfriend fatally shot him outside a Chesterfield, Virginia police station, reported WTVR. He was dropping his daughter off after spending the weekend with her.
The Chesterfield Police Department said that the Virginia father was shot in the parking lot of Appomattox Police Station at 2920 W Hundred Road around 6:30 p.m.
“Two parties met to complete a child custody exchange in the parking lot at Appomattox Police Station. At the time of the exchange, an on-duty officer was working in his patrol vehicle in the station parking lot; the officer was facing away from where the custody exchange was occurring,” a Chester Police spokesperson reportedly wrote in an email.
Jeffries’ killer, Corey D. Goodson Sr., 44, was arrested at the scene and was charged with second-degree murder.
The deceased man’s cousin, Earl Jeffries, wrote a heartbreaking Facebook post about the tragic incident on Jan. 7.
“Now this one just pissed me off!! Cuz was shot and killed trying to be a good father. There are so many unnecessary killings going on in our community. We have so many so-called wannabe gangstas that will kill someone over stupid mess!” he wrote. “Everyone is walking around with a gun trying to prove they ain’t no punk or they ain’t soft. I myself was guilty of this stupidity. Killing someone doesn’t make you a man, but walking away does! A punk can pull the trigger. Y’all are only proving that you are what society think young black men are, and that is stupid!!”
He went on to say that real men can settle their differences without violence. Then, he concluded his message by saying, “R.I.P. Stuart “StayFresh” Jeffries.”
